The Marines identified 1st. Lt. Hugh C. McDowell, 24, of Washington, D.C., as the Marine who died in a rollover accident at
Camp Pendleton Thursday.
McDowell and six Marines were in a Light Armored Vehicle that rolled over during training. The other Marines are listed in stable condition, the Marines said in a statement.
McDowell was a platoon commander assigned to the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, the statement said. He was commissioned on May 5, 2017, and his awards include the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
"We recognize that military operations are inherently dangerous and we take extreme precautions to ensure the safety and welfare of our Marines," the Marines said.
"This is a tragic accident and we are heartbroken at the loss of a member of our Marine Corps family. We will do all we can to comfort the family, friends and colleagues of Lt McDowell."
Last month another Marine, Staff Sgt. Joshua Braica, was killed in another rollover accident during training on the base.
Braica was injured when his MRZR off-road vehicle rolled over. He died the next day. He was attached to the 1st Marine Raider Battalion.
Two of the three other Marines on board received minor injuries in the one-vehicle crash, which is under investigation.
