Re “These schools don’t just teach kids. They help families build ‘a community where we all work together.’” (May 27): How wonderful! This sounds like a great program for both the students and the community. This is what we need, for people to work together, instead of ripping America apart. Thank God for the teachers and public schools who have served this country well for 240 years and supply educational opportunities for all children, regardless of color, ethnicity, wealth or learning handicaps. The public schools have been the backbone of this nation, supplying opportunity, literacy, equality and civic understanding that’s important to a nation of freedom.
When walking out of church on a recent Sunday, I was struck by a statement made by one of my friends, a fellow parishioner. She said, rather matter-of-factly, “Well, Jesus was a socialist — he helped the downtrodden, the poor, the handicapped, and the newcomers!” Well, I think Fay Elementary School is carrying the ball for Jesus in the form of public school teacher power. Congratulations to this wonderful institution.
