A day after exiting after running into a walk in left field, Gavin Sheets is out of the lineup to start a four-game series in San Francisco.
Monday’s first pitch is at 6:45 p.m. on Padres.TV.
Sheets’ absence pushed Tyler Wade into left field and gives Manny Machado his fourth DH day of the season.

The Padres had planned to rotate regulars into the DH spot throughout this stretch of 13 games in a row and 26 games in 27 days.
Sheets’ ailments made it necessary to do so on Monday as he was dealing with a sore hip, a head contusion and a jammed wrist and thumb, Padres manager Mike Shildt said Sunday afternoon.
Sheets was also being tested and monitored for concussion symptoms. He did not speak to the media after Sunday’s game.
With Sheets out of the lineup, an offense that ranks last in the majors with a .611 OPS since May 16 will be further tested.
Sheets leads the team with 34 RBIs, ranks second with 11 homers and third with an .817 OPS.
Wade (.640 OPS) will bat seventh and start for the third time in left field, where Sheets had been starting more frequently as the Padres search for offense at the position.
Padres left fielders, weighed down by the injured Jason Heyward (.529 OPS in 26 games), rank second to last in the majors with a .532 OPS.
Not only does Sheets’ absence hurt what the Padres have been trying to find in left field, it further comprises bottom-third struggles as Jose Iglesias (.594 OPS) will start at third base for Machado and bat eighth and catcher Elias Díaz (.603 OPS) will bat ninth.
The Padres rank 28th in the majors in OPS amassed by bottom-three hitters (.584), ahead of only the Angels (.581) and the White Sox (.553).
Before the game, the Giants activated infielder/outfielder Jerar Encarnacion from the 60-day injured list and optioned outfielder Luis Matos to Triple-A Sacramento.
Here is how the Giants will line up for the opening game:

Padres RHP Stephen Kolek (3-1, 4.11 ERA)
The converted Rule 5 reliever has a 7.71 ERA in three starts (16⅓ IP) since his shutout at Coors Field, but all six runs in his last start (5⅓ IP) cross the plate in the first inning. Kolek has a 1.33 ERA in three starts away from Petco Park (9.58 ERA). As a reliever, Kolek allowed two runs in three innings across four appearances last year against the Giants.

Giants RHP Logan Webb (5-5, 2.82 ERA)
The 2023 NL Cy Young runner-up leads the NL with a 2.20 FIP and he’s striking out more batters (10.3 per nine innings) than his career rate (8.3). Webb, however, has allowed six runs over his last 10 innings (5.40 ERA) and the Padres beat him in late April in San Diego with five runs in five innings. Webb has a 3.26 ERA in 85 ⅔ innings in his career against the Padres.
