Pitching matchups
Monday
Padres RHP Stephen Kolek (3-1, 4.11 ERA) | The converted Rule 5 reliever has a 7.71 ERA in three starts (16⅓ IP) since his shutout at Coors Field, but all six runs in his last start (5⅓ IP) cross the plate in the first inning. Kolek has a 1.33 ERA in three starts away from Petco Park (9.58 ERA). As a reliever, Kolek allowed two runs in three innings across four appearances last year against the Giants.
Giants RHP Logan Webb (5-5, 2.82 ERA) | The 2023 NL Cy Young runner-up leads the NL with a 2.20 FIP and he’s striking out more batters (10.3 per nine innings) than his career rate (8.3). Webb, however, has allowed six runs over his last 10 innings (5.40 ERA) and the Padres beat him in late April in San Diego with five runs in five innings. Webb has a 3.26 ERA in 85 ⅔ innings in his career against the Padres.
Tuesday
Padres TBA | This start could go to RHP Ryan Bergert, who has allowed two runs over his last 13⅓ innings at Triple-A El Paso and last pitched on May 28. RHP Matt Waldron (oblique) threw four innings in his fourth rehab start with Triple-A El Paso on Friday, so he wouldn’t be available until later in the series.
Giants RHP Landen Roupp (3-4, 3.54 ERA) | The second-year pitcher has a 3.55 ERA in 106 ⅓ innings since working between the rotation and the bullpen while making his debut last year. Roupp has worked strictly as a starter this season and allowed two earned runs over fewer in all five starts in May (1.73 ERA). The Padres beat Roupp in late April in San Diego (4⅓ IP, 4 ER).
Wednesday
Padres RHP Nick Pivetta (6-2, 2.74 ERA) | He is coming off his first walk-less start since his Padres debut, as he struck out eight over six innings of two-run ball. The victory was his first since April 29, although Pivetta has thrown three straight quality starts (2.00 ERA). He allowed three runs in 5⅓ innings in beating the Giants in late April in San Diego. Pivetta has a 4.32 ERA over five road starts.
Giants LHP Kyle Harrison (1-1, 2.51 ERA) | He’s making his third start of the season in place of the injured Justin Verlander. In that role, he has struck out nine, walked threw and allowed two runs over nine innings. The 23-year-old has made two starts in his career against the padres, allowing six runs in 5 ⅔ innings in a loss in 2023 and two runs in six innings in a win last year.
Thursday
Padres Dylan Cease (1-4, 4.66 ERA) | While the Padres are 7-5 in Cease’s starts, he has not earned a win since April 6 and has just four quality starts this year. Cease went 1-2 in four starts against the Giants last year (3.18 ERA), striking out 27 against eight walks.
Giants LHP Robbie Ray (7-1, 2.43 ERA) | The 2021 AL Cy Young winner has a 3.12 ERA in 101 innings since returning from injury last year with the Giants. The former Diamondback has a 4.27 ERA in 18 career starts (97 IP) against the Padres, but he has not faced them since 2020.

Training room
San Francisco: RHP Justin Verlander (pec) threw a bullpen on Friday, but he is not expected to return to the rotation against the Padres. 1B/OF Jerar Encarnacion (hand), however, could return this week. Meantime, C Tom Murphy (back) is hopeful to return before the end of the half.
San Diego: Gavin Sheets exited Sunday’s game after a collision with the wall in left field. He is dealing with head contusion, hip soreness and a jammed wrist and thumb. He is also being tested for a concussion. A pinched nerve is the root of the discomfort in RHP Michael King’s shoulder. He has played light catch but does not yet have a timetable. RHP Yu Darvish (elbow) is also without a timetable as he has not thrown a bullpen since his mid-May rehab start in Las Vegas. RHP Matt Waldron (oblique), however, threw 75 pitches over four innings in a final rehab start on Friday as he was optioned to Triple-A El Paso after the start. RHP Bryan Hoeing (shoulder) is also rehabbing with El Paso.
