Car crashes into bench and tree on Village sidewalk
Enhance La Jolla is seeking witnesses to a car crash in The Village that took out a public bench and a magnolia tree on the Herschel Avenue sidewalk early May 24. The incident was not reported until Enhance La Jolla litter abatement crews arrived that morning.
“The car appeared to have driven straight up Herschel Avenue from Prospect Street at a high rate of speed and through the intersection at Wall Street, then veered to the right, jumping the [curb] and just missing the first magnolia tree by inches, plowing over a full memorial bench that was bolted to the sidewalk bricks and continuing to the next magnolia tree, knocking that down and coming to a stop,” La Jolla Maintenance Assessment District Manager Brian Earley said, based on his conversations with police. “A portion of the bumper was on the sidewalk, but the car was able to drive away.”
With no witnesses having come forward so far, Enhance La Jolla is looking for anyone with a security camera pointing at that location to help with the investigation.
In the meantime, Earley said, the magnolia tree will be replaced, but not the bench.
