Luis Arraez is not only hitless over this last three games, he struck out whiffing on three pitches on Sunday, a first for the three-time batting champ.
So Monday, with a left-hander on the mound in former Padres first-rounder Ryan Weathers, is a good day to give Arraez a rest as he’ll sit to start the Padres’ three-game series against the Miami Marlins.
First pitch is at 5:40 p.m. on Padres.TV.
With Arraez on the bench, Jake Cronenworth will get his first start of the season at first base, pushing Gavin Sheets back out to left field as Jose Iglesias gets the start at second base.

Arraez hit .361/.378/.528 during a nine-game hitting streak before going hitless in three games in Atlanta. He struck out just the one time and has punched out just five times this season.
Arraez, who was traded from Miami is hitting .241/.263/.370 in 60 plate appearances this year against lefties.
Sheets’ start in left field will be his fourth this season as the Padres look to get some production out of the position. That will give Luis Campusano a second straight start as the DH. Campusano is 0-for-10 with five walks and five strikeouts. He struck out four times on Sunday to start his second stint in the majors this season.
Cronenworth began 2024 as the Padres’ primary first baseman but will be playing his first game at first base this year as Arraez (38 starts) and Sheets (8) have handled the bulk of the workload at the position.
With Arraez out of the lineup, center fielder Jackson Merrill will get his first start this season in the two-hole, Sheets will serve as the clean-up hitter and Cronenworth, Campusano, Iglesias and catcher Martín Maldonado will hold down the final four spots in the lineup.
Moving Sheets into the clean-up spot for the first time since May 11 makes sense. He has ed for four of the team’s eight homers and eight of the team’s 15 RBIs over the last seven games.

Monday’s pitching matchup
Marlins LHP Ryan Weathers (1-0, 1.80 ERA)
The former Padres, now 25 years old, hasn’t faced his former team since allowing five runs in 3⅓ innings in a loss in 2023, after he was traded in the deal that brought 1B Garrett Cooper and RHP Sean Reynolds into the organization. A forearm injury delayed Weathers’ 2025 debut until mid-May. He has allowed just two solo homers while striking out nine against one walk over 10 innings.
Here is how Weathers has fared against current Padres:
Padres RHP Randy Vásquez (3-4, 4.49 ERA)
He’s averaging 4.8 walks per nine innings on the season, but he’s walked just two against 14 strikeouts over his last 16⅔ innings (2.70 ERA). Vásquez hasn’t made a start in his career against the Marlins, but he beat them with two runs over 3⅔ innings in relief with the Yankees in 2023.
Only three Marlins have history with Vásquez:
- OF Jesus Sanchez (0-for-2)
- C Nick Fortes (0-for-1)
- INF Connor Norby (0-for-1, K)
