Tribute to military heroes
The Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial will honor the nation’s heroes in a tribute event from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 26 at 6905 La Jolla Scenic Drive. The event will honor in particular Seaman Lakiba Nicole Palmer and her 16 fellow sailors who lost their lives during the terrorist attack on the USS Cole on Oct. 12, 2000. The ceremony will honor veterans, former prisoners of war, and those still listed as missing in action along with the USS Cole heroes. Command Master Chief of the USS Cole at the time of the attack, retired Navy Command Master Chief Petty Officer James Parlier, and the ship’s executive officer, retired Navy Capt. A series of events will take place as part of the USS Midway Museum’s annual Legacy Week lineup. Visitors can meet former military aviators and see the planes they flew from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 25. On May 26, there will be a wreath ceremony at 9 a.m. in remembrance of service who died in the line of service. The event will include guest speakers, a flyover and ceremonial tossing of a memorial wreath over the ship in honor of the fallen. The event will include a roundtable discussion titled “Vietnam, a Nation at the Crossroads of History” at 10:30 a.m. moderated by journalist Tim O’Leary. An audience Q&A will follow. A Vietnamese-themed lunch will be served after the Q&A at noon. The will include a Vietnam native who emigrated to the U.S., a first-generation Vietnamese American, and two American veterans of the Vietnam War. Thao L. Ha, a sociology professor at MiraCosta College, will be one of the ists. There will be live music. The event is free except for lunch, which is $4 per person for ages 60 and older, or $8 per person for all others. The center is at 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. Lunch reservations are required. Veterans groups hold Memorial Day gathering
A Memorial Day Ceremony will be presented by VFW Post 7041 and American Legion Post 365 at 10 a.m. May 26 at Vista City Hall, 200 Civic Center Drive. Lunch will be afterward at the American Legion Post, 1234 S. Santa Fe Ave.
Church hosts talk at senior center
First Church of Christ, Scientist, Carlsbad-Vista holds it annual free talk at 7 p.m. May 27 on “Is Jesus’ Work a Model for Today?” The speaker is Alexandre Fisher, who explains the practical application of Jesus’ teaching in daily life, including through physical healing.
