Handpicked by Locals is a regularly appearing feature that takes readers on a trip to the favorite haunts of interesting county residents.

Misty Jones became the director of the San Diego Public Library in November 2014. In her role, she oversees more than 30 city branches, including the 37th and newest location: Pacific Highlands Ranch library

For eight of those years, she has lived in South Park.

“I love my little neighborhood,” Jones wrote in an email. “It is so vibrant, with people walking around all the time, but it’s also quaint. At night when all the trees on Fern (Street) are lit, it’s magical.”

For The San Diego Union-Tribune’s series where locals share their favorite places in their city or community, Jones chose the neighboring areas of South Park and Golden Hill to highlight.

“I have lived in South Park for eight years and feel so connected to the neighborhood,” she explained. “Often, a 15 (minute) walk will turn into an hour because you stop and catch up with all the neighbors. It really has a small-town feel.”
