UPDATED:

A driver who slammed into the back of a U.S. Postal Service semi-truck trailer near Bonsall early Tuesday was killed, and the vehicle became engulfed in flames after the crash, authorities said.

The crash occurred around 2:50 a.m. on Interstate 15 near state Route 76, the California Highway Patrol said.

The driver of a Toyota Corolla was heading north when, for unknown reasons, ran into the rear of the semi-truck trailer. Following the crash, the Toyota caught fire.

The driver died at the scene. The county Medical Examiner’s Office will release the driver’s name. No information about the victim was available.

CHP Officer Hunter Gerber said it was unknown if drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.

Anyone with information about the crash was asked to call the CHP’s Oceanside office at 760-643-3400.
