What started out late Friday night as a police pursuit in the Grant Hill neighborhood ended with a collision into a retaining wall, killing a 52-year-old enger, San Diego police said.

The incident began around 11:30 p.m. when a police officer tried to stop a Mercedes Benz near 29th Street and Imperial Avenue. However, the driver, a 52-year-old man, failed to stop, and a pursuit began, according to San Diego police officer David O’Brien. As the two cars approached the corner of 32nd and J streets, the driver of the Mercedes Benz tried to make a right turn onto J Street, but lost control and crashed into a wall at the northeast corner of the intersection, O’Brien said.

The enger in the front seat was taken to a hospital where he died, police said. The driver had a leg injury and was taken to the hospital.

The department’s traffic division is handling the investigation. Police said that driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs was a factor in the collision.

The driver and enger have not been identified. Anyone with information related to the accident is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
