PUBLISHED:

An elbow reconstruction has provided Reiss Knehr with a new lease on his career.

Some more zip on his fastball, too.

The 28-year-old right-hander leads the Padres farm system with eight saves in his first full year back from Tommy John surgery, a rebound powered by a fastball that has jumped from 93 mph before his surgery to 94.5 mph

Knehr has struck out 22 batters against seven walks over 15 innings to start the year at Triple-A El Paso, a locale that makes a 2.40 ERA and an 0.93 WHIP all that more impressive.

Knehr’s strikeout rate of 13.2 per nine innings is also well above his career average (9.9).

This is actually Knehr’s second stint with the Padres.

Knehr was removed from the 40-man roster after the 2023 season as he prepared to rehab his Tommy John surgery. He missed all of 2024 and elected free agency after the season. He signed a new minor league deal in late February with the Padres, the team that drafted him in 20th round in 2018 out of Fordham University in New York.

Baseball America ranked Knehr as high as No. 16 among the Padres’ top prospects in 2021. He was developed as a starting pitcher, made his debut in 2021 (4.97 ERA over 29 innings) and posted a 5.96 ERA over 48⅓ innings over three years as an up-and-down arm that settled in the bullpen.
