UPDATED:

Police on Wednesday released the name of a man who was allegedly shot and killed by his son on Sunday in the Skyline neighborhood.

Luis Adrian Godinez Gonzalez, 56, was shot at a home on Skyline Drive, likely around 8 a.m., San Diego police said.

The suspect, Adrian Godinez, 35, identified as Gonzalez’s son, was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

Godinez was due to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon, but a deputy public defender representing him declared a doubt regarding his competency to stand trial, and Godinez did not enter a plea. A defendant is deemed incompetent to stand trial if he or she is unable to understand the nature of the criminal proceedings or assist an attorney in their defense.

During Wednesday’s brief court hearing, Godinez appeared in court remotely from a hospital. What led to his hospitalization was not disclosed.

Police responded to the home just before 8:25 a.m. regarding reports of a gunshot and of a man walking in the area with a gun, police said in a statement.

When officers arrived in the area, they received a report of a robbery at the nearby Moonlight Liquor on Meadowbrook Drive during which the suspect had reportedly fired a gun.

Police later said they did not believe anything was taken from the store during the incident.

Officers searched the area and saw a man with blood on him walk into the backyard of a home, police said. The officers also allegedly saw blood near the front door of the residence.

Officers surrounded the home and requested the assistance of the SWAT team.

Officers allegedly saw the suspect removing his clothes in the backyard and “manipulating” a gun, police said. The suspect later redressed, dropped the gun and surrendered to officers.

Police entered the home to investigate the blood near the front door and found Gonzalez suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

Gonzalez was transported to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Godinez will remain in custody without bail, and in the interim, he will be examined by a doctor to determine whether he is competent for trial.
