Both Luis Arraez and Jason Heyward, as expected, are returning from the injured list and are in Tuesday’s lineup to start a two-game series against the San Francisco Giants.
First pitch is at 6:40 p.m. on Padres.TV.
The corresponding moves will see the Padres cut ties with veteran infielder Yuli Gurriel and place infielder Mason McCoy on the 10-day injured list.
Neither move is a surprise.
McCoy dislocated his left pinky on Friday night. He had attempted to avoid the injured list and even pinch-ran on Sunday.
Meantime, Gurriel was hitting .111/.200/.139 in 40 plate appearances and had just one hit in his last 15 plate appearances.
The 40-year-old Cuban signed a minor league deal during spring training and hit .306/.342/.472 with one homer in 16 Cactus League games to force his way onto the opening day roster.
He saw most of his action against left-handed starters, either as a DH (eight games) or a first baseman (four games).
Arraez (concussion) will be back at first base and in the two-hole in his return to the lineup. The Padres went 1-5 without him in the starting lineup last week and they’re riding a season-high four-game losing streak into their first meeting with the Giants.

Heyward (knee) will man left field in his return to the lineup and bat eighth, between center fielder Tyler Wade and catcher Elias Díaz.
The 35-year-old Heyward is hitting .190/.255/.286 with one homer and six RBIs through his first 48 plate appearances with the Padres (17-11).

Tuesday’s pitching matchup
Giants RHP Logan Webb (3-1, 1.98 ERA)
The Giants’ ace has a 3.22 ERA while collecting NL Cy Young votes over the last three seasons, which includes finishing as the runner-up in 2023. His strikeout rate this year (10.9 per nine innings) is well above his career rate (8.2 per nine innings). Webb has a 2.90 ERA in 80⅔ career innings against the Padres, but he allowed 10 earned runs in 23 innings (3.91 ERA) last year.
Here is how Webb has fared against current Padres:
Padres RHP Nick Pivetta (4-1, 1.20 ERA)
The Padres have won five of his six starts and all three at Petco Park, where Pivetta has a 0.45 ERA and is holding opponents to a .306 OPS over 20 innings. Pivetta has a 5.40 ERA in 13⅓ career innings against the Giants, but he has not faced them since 2019, when he allowed five earned runs over three relief appearances.
Only four current Giants have history with Pivetta:
- 3B Matt Chapman (5-for-25, 2B, 10 Ks)
- SS Willy Adames (3-for-8, 3 2Bs, 2 BBs, 2 Ks)
- INF Wilmer Flores (1-for-4, K)
- OF Mike Yastrzemski (1-for-2, HR, RBI)
