
San Diego State will host part of the baseball and softball championships this spring alongside USD and UC San Diego.
There will be a baseball-softball doubleheader at San Diego State on May 30, with Division 2 and Open Division baseball as well as Divisions 1 and 2 softball.
Baseball shifts to USD on May 31 for Divisions 1, 3 and 4.
Softball moves to UC San Diego on May 31 for Divisions 3 and 4 and the Open Division.
The host site for the Divisions 5 and 5-AA baseball and softball finals have yet to be announced. Those finals are set for May 29.
Other playoff updates:
The CIF San Diego Section boys team tennis finals will be held May 3 at Rancho Bernardo High School (Open Division, Division 1) and Canyon Crest Academy (Division 2 and 3). The championships will run simultaneously at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Barnes Tennis Center has hosted the events in years past but will not host this spring due to a scheduling conflict. The boys individual finals will be held May 10 at the Balboa Tennis Club.
• Del Norte High School will host the Division 1 boys and girls track championships, with University City hosting Division 2 and Valley Center hosting Division 3. All three meets will be held May 17. The section championships are May 24 at Mt. Carmel.
• The swimming and diving championships will take place May 9-10 at Granite Hills High School.
• All four girls lacrosse finals will be held at San Dieguito Academy. The Open Division is set for May 16, while the finals in Divisions 1, 2 and 3 will be held May 17. Boys lacrosse will follow the same format as the girls, but at Westview High School.
• The gymnastics championships will be held May 23 at West Hills High School.
• The boys golf championships will be held May 21 at Torrey Pines South.
• The beach volleyball finals are scheduled for Mesa College on May 10.
• The boys volleyball finals will be played at four different locations. The Division 5 and 5-AA finals will be held on May 15 at Southwestern College and Mira Costa College, respectively. The next day features the Divisions 1 and 3 finals at Mira Mesa High School, while the Divisions 2 and 4 and Open Division finals will be held May 17 at Francis Parker.
• The team bton finals will be held May 10 at Kearny High School, with the individual championships scheduled for May 17 at the Balboa Activity Center.
‘Coach Pete’ es
Bill Peterson, known as “Coach Pete” in his 22 years as boys basketball coach at Lincoln, Kearny and St. Augustine, died March 29. He was 91.
Peterson went 404-196 in his career. His teams won four CIF championships, earned three state playoff berths and captured 10 league championships. In one four-year stretch at Lincoln (1969-72), the Hornets went 70-20. In a five-year stretch at Kearny (1990-94), the Komets were 97-22.
Peterson played collegiately at Colorado, where he was a part of the Buffaloes’ 1955 Final Four team. He was drafted into the Marines after graduation.
Coaches honored by CIF
Lindsay Rubin of Brawley and Tim White of Borrego Springs have been honored by the State CIF as 2024-25 Model Coach Award winners.
The award is designed to recognize coaches who have served as positive role models in their schools and communities.
Rubin led the Brawley girls volleyball team to a 31-12 record and the CIF San Diego Section Division 3 championship this season. The Wildcats lost to Walnut in the Division 4 Southern California quarterfinals.
Over the last 25 years, White has coached just about every sport at Borrego, including football, basketball and golf.
All-Star Night set
The Padres High School All-Star Night is set for June 25 at Petco Park. The annual event is played in an East vs. West format and features the best players in San Diego County regardless of year in school.
The All-Star Night is set to begin around 5 p.m. after the Nationals and Padres finish their day game.
An eight-player Home Run Derby precedes the nine-inning high school game.
