Alleged driver arrested after fatal hit-and-run crash in Valley Center

Nolan Deskovick, 40, was arrested on suspicion of fatally striking a pedestrian walking east across Lake Wohlford Road near Valley View Casino on Thursday

UPDATED:

The alleged driver in a hit-and-run crash that killed a 25-year-old Escondido man walking across the street in Valley Center was arrested Friday, California Highway Patrol officers said.

Nolan Deskovick, 40, was arrested in connection with the crash reported around 10:50 p.m. on Lake Wohlford Road near Valley View Casino on Thursday, Officer Hunter Gerber said in a news release.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and took the pedestrian, later identified as Elias Arenas, to a hospital, where he died, Gerber said.

Officers learned that Arenas was walking eastbound across the road when he was struck by a Chevrolet Equinox, Gerber said. The SUV then fled the scene.

Investigators connected Deskovick to the crash and arrested him the next day around 6:30 a.m. He was booked into Vista Jail.

During his arraignment Tuesday, Deskovick pleaded not guilty to hit and run causing death with allegations that he committed the offense while out on bail, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

His bail was set at $500,000, and he faces a maximum sentence of eight years in prison, prosecutors said.
