
San Diego State, USD and Cal State San Marcos all had success in a variety of sports last weekend.
The Aztecs’ softball team swept a weekend series from UNLV to move into second in the Mountain West standings, while the women’s tennis team clinched a share of the conference title.
The resurgent USD baseball team completed a three-game sweep at Saint Mary’s, while both the men’s and women’s tennis teams claimed conference titles.
And San Marcos’ softball team pulled off a sweep, while the Cougars’ No. 1-ranked women’s lacrosse team won the NCAA Division II West Regionals.

• USD’s baseball team (11-24, 6-3) moved into third place in the WCC with a sweep at Saint Mary’s that stretched the Toreros’ winning streak to five straight games. Austin Smith (Granite Hills High School) went 5-for-12 in the three games with a double, a home run and six RBIs to stretch his hitting streak to 26 straight games. Rex Watson was 5-for-15 with a home run and six RBIs to earn WCC Freshman of the Week honors. Al Beltre, Connor Meidroth, Jack Gurevitch and Taylor Lobiner also homered for the Toreros.
• The Toreros’ seventh-ranked men’s tennis team won 4-1 at Gonzaga to clinch a share of a fourth straight WCC regular-season title. Third-ranked Oliver Tarvet won his singles match and team with Stian Klaassen to win a doubles match. Klaassen also won his singles match.
• USD’s women scored their first win over Pepperdine in 13 years, upsetting the Waves 4-3 at the Hogan Tennis Center to claim their first WCC regular season title. Claudia de las Heras and Kailey Evans each won their singles title, then teamed for a doubles win for three of USD’s points.
• San Diego State’s softball team has won four straight games to improve to 27-14 overall and 11-4 in MW play. Jazmin Williams (Steele Canyon High School) was 5-for-8 in the sweep of UNLV with a double, two home runs and seven RBIs and was named the Mountain West Player of the Week. Cece Cellura picked up two wins to improve to 11-6, allowing four hits with five strikeouts over 8 2/3 innings and was named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week.
• SDSU’s women’s tennis team (15-6, 8-1) defeated New Mexico 4-0 Saturday. Jo-Yee Chan, Ninon Martinach and Zoe Olmos each won their singles match and shared in a doubles win. The women also defeated Utah State 4-1.
• Meanwhile, SDSU’s baseball team (11-25, 7-8) lost two of three to Fresno State.
• Cal State San Marcos (33-10, 19-9 CCA) ran its softball winning streak to eight straight with a four-game home sweep of Cal State San Bernardino. Jayline Sloss (14-4, 2.09 ERA) picked up two wins with a pair of complete games to be named the CCAA Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week. The Cougars are 18th in the most recent Division II national softball poll.
• The Cougars’ baseball team (19-16, 14-12) took three of four games from Cal State East Bay while renaming their Cal State San Marcos field for former coach Dennis Pugh. The Cougars trailed by nine runs in the fourth game before rallying to win 15-14 in 12 innings. Garrett Teunissen was 4-for-6 with a home run two walks, two RBIs and three runs scored in the wild finale.
• Audrey Street of Cal State San Marcos was named the Player of the Year of the Western Women’s Lacrosse League after the Cougars won the Western Regionals title at Santa Cruz. The Cougars are the No. 1-ranked team in Division II and are 12-0 while outscoring their opponents 160-53. UC San Diego is ranked ninth and USD 12th.
• UC San Diego’s baseball team (16-18, 7-8) took two straight from Cal State Northridge. Alex Leopard was 3-for-5 with a home run, eight RBIs and three runs.
• UCSD (10-3) defeated Point Loma Nazarene (14-4) 4-2 in women’s tennis. The Sea Lions are ranked No. 8 nationally in Division II.
• Palomar College (24-10, 15-4) continues to lead the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference baseball standings, although Grossmont College (24-9, 14-5) has won seven straight games to inch to within a game of the Comets. Palomar’s softball team, which is ranked second in the state, is 30-3 overall and remains undefeated at 11-0 in PCAC play.
