A 25-year-old man was killed when he lost control of a sports scooter and crashed into a concrete barrier the night of April 11 in La Jolla, according to San Diego police.

Officers responded at 9:06 p.m. to the 3200 block of Torrey Pines Road, near Torrey Pines Elementary School, where they learned the man had been riding a 2023 Yamaha XMAX on northbound Torrey Pines, was unable to navigate a curve in the road and crashed into the barrier, police Sgt. Clint Leisz said.
The man was ejected from the scooter and landed in a southbound lane, where he was struck by a vehicle. The driver of that vehicle fled the scene, police said. The scooter rider died at the scene from his injuries.
The Police Department’s Traffic Division is investigating the case. Anyone with information related to it can call 858-495-7800 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
