As a junior member of the eight-person United States glider team, Milan Bregman, a senior at The Grauer School, an independent school in Encinitas, helped his Junior glider team finish in second place out of the 18 countries competing at the FAI F5J World Championships for Electric Powered Thermal Duration Gliders held March 2-8 in Cordoba, Argentina.
There were 15 rounds during the week, with Bregman competing about three times per day. Each of the three gliders that he brought to the competition had to meet a high level of specifications to be allowed to fly in the competition, according to a news release.
“This was one of the largest competitions that Milan [Bregman] has competed in at such a high level, and he gained a lot of wisdom and advice from other competitors. This was his first time traveling to a country in South America,” said Dana Abplanalp-Diggs, M.Ed., head of school for The Grauer School, in the news release. “As a school, we help our students succeed inside and outside the classroom by fostering an environment that encourages students to pursue ions that may not be accessible or included in traditional schooling. We are truly proud of Milan for his accomplishments in the glider world.”
Last fall, Bregman finished in third place overall in the F5J Over the Rockies glider competition in Denver, Colorado, competing against 26 other glider pilots. This win helped him qualify for the World Championships and the USA Team. He has participated in these glider competitions for several years.
