A 55-year-old man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of fatally assaulting another man in front of a Hillcrest gas station, police said.
The man was accused of strangling his 61-year-old victim and hitting the man’s head against the ground near a gas station on Washington Street near Fourth Avenue shortly before 5 p.m., San Diego homicide Lt. Lou Maggi said in a news release. Witnesses at the scene called 911 and told dispatchers the assailant was last seen walking west.
When officers arrived, they found the victim unconscious. They istered aid to him before he was transported to the hospital, but he did not survive. The name of the victim has not been released pending notification of his family.
Officers found and arrested Solomon Guerrero near the intersection of West Washington Street and Albatross Street, Maggi said.
Investigators do not believe Guerrero and the victim knew each other. Both men were thought to be homeless, the lieutenant said.
Guerroro was booked into the San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of murder.
