The San Diego State football team will be well-rested for the second half of the 2025 season.
An extra week in the football calendar for the second straight year translates to two bye weeks during the Aztecs’ 12-game schedule. Per the schedule unveiled by the Mountain West on Thursday, both of SDSU’s off weeks will come during the first half of the season.
The first bye comes in Week 3 (Sept. 13), following SDSU’s season opener against Stony Brook and second-week game at Washington State. SDSU then plays four more games, against Cal and at Northern Illinois, before conference contests against Colorado State and at Nevada. The team will then take the week of Oct. 18 off.
The second half of the season will involve six straight conference contests, SDSU’s final Mountain West games before moving to the Pac-12 beginning with the 2026-27 school year.
For the third straight season, the Mountain West will compete as one 12-team league rather than two six-team divisions. The two teams with the best winning percentages will play in the championship game, with the higher-ranked team hosting.
SDSU’s schedule has its share of notables:
• The Aztecs open their season on Aug. 28 against Stony Brook at Snapdragon Stadium. It is the fifth time in program history (also 2000-02 and 2006) that the season starts on a Thursday. It is the first Thursday game for SDSU since a 42-7 win over Cincinnati in the 2015 Hawaii Bowl.
• All other games are currently listed for Saturday kickoffs. Some games could be moved to weekdays — typically a Friday afternoon or evening — for television. SDSU typically plays two Friday games each season. Kickoff times and TV broadcast networks — the Mountain West partners with CBS and Fox — will be announced in the coming months.
• SDSU plays six home games and six road games for the second straight season and only the third time in eight full seasons. The Aztecs had become accustomed to seven home games in recent years. Season-ticket prices are approximately 20% lower than in 2023, which included seven home games. It’s effectively a 6-7% reduction in cost with six games.
• SDSU plays at Fresno State on Oct. 25, resuming a rivalry that dates to 1923. The teams were not scheduled last season, the first time since 2010. The Aztecs lead the series 31-27-4, including a 33-18 victory to close out the 2023 season and secure the “Old Oil Can.”
• The Aztecs conclude the regular season at New Mexico. It is the first season-ending road game since 2013.
• SDSU’s spring practices will begin March 10. The Aztecs will practice 15 times over six weeks, with the players off the week of March 31 for spring break. The annual AztecFAST Showcase will be held April 19 at Snapdragon Stadium.
SDSU has gone 4-8 in back-to-back seasons, marking the first time since 2008-09 the Aztecs have suffered two straight losing seasons.
