
San Diego FC wrapped up its three-match trip to the Coachella Valley Invitational in style, routing the New York Red Bulls 6-0 in the final tuneup before the team’s inaugural regular-season match.
Anders Dreyer scored a pair of goals on a day when Chucky Lozano, Luca de la Torre, Marcus Ingvartsen and Emmanuel Boateng chipped in scores of their own. San Diego had been outscored 6-1 in their first two exhibitions at the Empire Polo Club, both losses; Saturday improved their goal differential to plus-1 for the tournament.
Major League Soccer’s newest franchise, San Diego FC will open its season Feb. 23 against the LA Galaxy in Carson. The club’s home opener is scheduled for March 1 against St. Louis City FC.
In Saturday’s eighth minute, Lozano found Dreyer, who punched in a left-foot shot past Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel. Lozano beat Coronel nine minutes later for a goal, and San Diego led 2-0. De la Torre made it 3-0 in the 40th minute, with Jeppe Tverskov logging the assist.
Dreyer scored his second goal in the 61st minute, and Ingvartsen followed with a score in the 64th minute and Boateng sunk a penalty kick just before the final whistle blew.
