The Grauer School, an independent school in Encinitas, collected 154 pounds of food for The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, which will allow the food bank to provide 128 meals, and the school’s Girl Rising Club collected 80 boxes of feminine products for PATH Connections. An estimated 16.9 million menstruating women in the United States struggle with securing feminine products for themselves because of prices, according to a news release.
“After learning that 25% of people in San Diego County are food-insecure we decided to host a food drive as the school-wide holiday service project this year,” said Jessi Brown, humanitarian service coordinator at The Grauer School, in the news release.
With the addition of the San Diego Food Bank’s North County facility, The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank provides emergency food to 400,000 children and families, active-duty military and fixed-income seniors living in poverty every month. With a mission to end homelessness for individuals, families and communities, PATH provides ive services and builds affordable and ive housing across the state.
“Feminine products are currently at record-high prices, which decreases the chances for low-income and unhoused women to get these products,” said Alicia Tembi, Girl Rising Club mentor and principal at The Grauer School, in the news release. “Donating these products is one of the most beneficial ways to women who can’t afford them. Our club’s goal was to collect as many products as we were able to help women in our San Diego community.”
