After a break for the holidays, the winter season for high school sports is back in full action, with the boys and girls basketball teams at The Bishop’s School, La Jolla High and La Jolla Country Day returning to the courts and the Bishop’s and La Jolla boys soccer teams facing off in the “Battle for Pearl Street.”
Here’s a recap of last week’s results.
Boys basketball
Bishop’s
Going into the week with an 11-5 record, the Knights had two games before the start of Coastal League play.
On Jan. 9 against Army-Navy Academy, Bishop’s was unable to get its offense going, scoring only 13 points in the first half, well below its 24-point average this season. Though the second half was better, the Knights lost 47-36, a season low in points scored.
Hoping to bounce back, the Knights traveled to Del Lago Academy two days later. Though the offense still struggled, Bishop’s pulled out a nine-point victory, 52-43.
The Knights (12-6) open league play at home against Maranatha Christian (10-8) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14.
After that, they will visit La Jolla Country Day at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Girls basketball
La Jolla High
La Jolla entered last week winning three of its past four games and racking up an 11-6 overall record, making for one of its best starts to a season in years.
Playing at home against Canyon Crest Academy on Jan. 7, the Vikings won 43-23 as senior Reagan Bennett and sophomore Soila Chadwick led the team in scoring with 15 points each.
Three days later, in their first Eastern League game of the season at San Diego High, the Vikings had a much tougher time. Again led by Bennett’s 15 points, La Jolla pulled out a 37-33 victory.
After breaking La Jolla’s career scoring record last season as a junior with more than 1,100 points, Bennett has added 370 points this season and is leading CIF San Diego Section Division III in scoring and field goals made.
Her twin sister, Drew, also a senior, is leading Division III in three-point shots made, with 36 on 113 attempts, or 32%.

After losing three consecutive games, Bishop’s had three chances last week to get back on track.
That mission started well Jan. 8 as the Knights crushed Helix, 68-36. Sophomore Kamaili Lasua led the way with 24 points.
Two days later, the Knights hosted Oceanside in another double-digit win, 49-33.
On Jan. 11 against Pioneer in the Coaches vs. Cancer Showcase, the Knights fell behind 27-16 at halftime. Though they attempted a comeback in the third quarter, Pioneer’s strong defense held them to just six points in the final quarter and Bishop’s lost 54-37.

In their first game after a 12-day break, the Torreys took on Centennial on Jan. 11 in a game that was close from start to finish.
With the score tied at 46 at the end of the fourth quarter, both teams scored only four points in the first overtime period, setting up Country Day’s first double overtime game since 2009.
Centennial outscored the Torreys by three points in the second overtime period for a 61-58 victory.
