The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon returns this weekend. Avoid traffic headaches and plan your route.

Most road closures and detours will be in effect from 5:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday in many San Diego neighborhoods

SAN DIEGO — Leaving the house Sunday morning? You’re going to want to plan ahead.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon is back, and it means lots of road closures as some 27,500 runners hit San Diego streets.

The course will begin in Balboa Park on Sixth Avenue and Quince Street at 6:15 a.m. and travel through Hillcrest, North Park and Normal Heights before the marathon breaks off from the half marathon. The marathon route continues through Mission Hills and Old Town, past SeaWorld and through Mission Valley, before ending downtown at Waterfront Park. Meanwhile, the half marathon will wind back through Balboa Park and also finish at Waterfront Park.

Northbound state Route 163 will be closed from A Street to Friars Road, and a smaller portion of the southbound 163 will be closed between Park Boulevard and A Street. Off- and on-ramps for multiple freeways will also be affected.

Most road closures and detours will be in effect from 5:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, but roads will reopen on a rolling basis as the last runners through.

The event will also create many “no parking” zones. Drivers are advised to heed signage in areas along the route to avoid being towed.

The marathon is expected to affect several MTS bus routes, and riders can check specifics at sdmts.com. Trolley service will be running in the areas.

Race organizers have partnered with the Waze smartphone app to advise motorists of closures for the weekend and help plan alternative routes.
