As you know, voting in the 2022 general election is underway, and today we’re talking about California State Senate District 38.

District 38 stretches along the coast from Orange County to San Diego County. It covers Mission Viejo, Camp Pendleton, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Del Mar and La Jolla.

There are two candidates running for this four-year term: Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear, a Democrat, and small business owner Matt Gunderson, a Republican.

Both candidates met with The San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial Board to discuss the issues. In this edited and condensed interview, you’ll hear the candidates on the topics of housing, state Proposition 1 about abortion and conception, climate change, Gov. Newsom’s EV mandate and more.
