The road was not kind to the San Diego Gulls over the weekend.
The Gulls completed a two-game swing to British Columbia, where it lost, 4-2, to the Abbotsford Canucks on Sunday following a 5-3 defeat on Saturday night.
San Diego now stands in seventh place of the AHL’s Pacific Division with a 13-15-2-0 record. Abbotsford is one spot ahead at 14-12-3-1.
The Gulls got off to a better start on Sunday as they led 2-1 after the first period on goals by Morgan Adams-Moisan and Benoit-Olivier Groulx. On Saturday, they gave up the first two goals.
“Well, the start was obviously better than (Saturday) night,” said Gulls assistant coach Max Talbot. “So the guys responded. We challenged them a little bit about that and they showed up. We made a couple adjustments and, really, it was about the attitude the guys had and we’re definitely happy with the way we came out of the gate.”
However, the game went sideways in the second period when the Gulls gave up the final three goals of the contest.
What happened in the second period?
“Well, they came harder at us, obviously,” said Talbot. “They made a push, which we expect. They did the same thing yesterday also. You know, they scored three goals in that period, which they deserve. That’s what we challenged the guys a little bit tonight before the game. We were a little unsatisfied about the amount time that we were able to sustain that pressure. I didn’t feel that we played a full game last night and today I think it happened again, so we’ll revisit.”
San Diego only managed six shots on goal over the final 20 minutes and were out-shot 40-21 for the game.
The Gulls will return to action on Wednesday at home against Colorado at 7 p.m.
