People have raved about Lincoln High’s offense, what with four wide receivers capable of running sub-11 seconds across 100 meters and strong-armed quarterback Jalen Daniels airing out the ball.

However, the Hornets’ defense was the difference Friday night. The No. 4-ranked Hive (2-1) racked up five sacks and forced three turnovers, two on interceptions by safety Hunter Wiggins, in a 30-13 victory over Mission Hills.

Wiggins’ first pick was spectacular, a diving catch just off the ground.

“Everyone always underestimates our defense,” said Lincoln coach David Dunn. “They can fly around. They love to hit. They love to play. There’s a lot of speed out there.”

Junior Roderick Robinson rushed for 124 yards on 24 carries and 3 TDs for Lincoln. Daniels completed 11 of 18 es for 171 yards.

For No. 3 Mission Hills (2-1), quarterback Gunnar Hensley completed 13 of 25 for 154 yards.

No. 1 Carlsbad 30, Lawndale 7: Carlsbad (3-0) led 16-0 at the half and cruised home. QB Julian Sayin threw for 160 yards and 2 TDs and ran for a score. Anthony Ferrelli with 9 tackles and Barrett Brennan with 7 led a defense that held Lawndale to 65 yards total offense.

No. 2 Cathedral Catholic 50, West Hills Chaminade 17: Cathedral improved to 2-1.

Madison 34, No. 7 Granite Hills 14: Defense paved the way for Madison (2-1) as Berrot Rankin, Martel Hughes and James Tivao combined for 34 tackles. Hughes and Tivao each had an interception. Tivao also rushed for 2 TDs. Tyson Bryant ed for 141 total yards. Granite Hills dropped to 2-1.

Downey Warren 40, No. 8 Grossmont 7: Nicholas Aguilar threw 3 TD es to beat Grossmont (2-1), which was playing its first game outside of the San Diego Section since losing 30-6 to St. John Bosco of Bellflower in 1996. Giovanni Burns caught a 10-yard TD from Trenton Giles for the Foothillers’ only score.

No. 9 Scripps Ranch 42, San Diego 14: QB Jax Leatherwood was 13 of 16 for 294 yards with 5 TDs for Scripps (3-0). A junior, Leatherwood has 12 TD es. Nijah Richards had 3 catches for 120 yards, 2 for TDs. Jalen Shaw ran for a TD and caught another, giving him 9 touchdowns on the season.

No. 10 Torrey Pines 42, Rancho Bernardo 20: Down 14-13 at the half, Torrey Pines (2-1) scored 15 points in the third quarter and 14 more in the fourth. The Falcons rushed for 322 yards with Easton Clements carrying 6 times for 142 yards and Alex Taylor 11 times for 103 yards. Rancho Bernardo (1-2) got 17 carries for 105 yards from Frankie Franchina as well as a 15-yard TD catch from QB Mark Sladnak.

San Pasqual 48, Valhalla 6: Jose Torres scored 3 TDs for San Pasqual (2-1). Wes Parker and Noah Snyder also scored for the Eagles. A.J. Cornthwaite hauled in an 11-yard TD from Tommy Logan for Valhalla (1-2).

Fallbrook 35, San Ysidro 14: Fallbrook (1-2) rolled up 460 yards total offense with QB Josh McBroom throwing for 111 yards and 2 TDs, both to Charlie Stallings. Marquise Washington had 10 carries for 136 yards, including a 77-yard TD run. Chris Bausch and Alan Leon also scored for the Warriors. San Ysidro (1-1) scored on an 88-yard run by Santiago Luna and on a from Ja’Marcus Giles to Johan Gutierrez. David Saldivar had 3 catches for 74 yards and had 3 sacks.

San Clemente 13, La Costa Canyon 6: Skylar Briggs had 8 tackles and a sack for LCC (1-2). San Clemente (3-0), which beat Oceanside 34-0, scored the winning TD on a 20-yard in the last minute.

Escondido 27, Westview 20: Escondido (2-1) rushed for 229 yards and 4 TDs with WB Xavier Terrazas rushing 15 times for 133 yards and 3 scores. He also threw for 88 yards. Nick Womack rushed 17 times for 67 yards. The Escondido defense had 2 interceptions and forced 2 fumbles. Westview (1-2) got 9 tackles from Lorenzo Miller, while Sam Krosch had 8.

Hilltop 24, Chula Vista 0: Josh Bernardo piled up 110 all-purpose yards and scored a TD to lead Hilltop (1-2) in the Kiwanis Bowl Trophy showdown, handing coach Bryan Wagner his first win at his alma mater. Tyeron Washington intercepted a for a score. Chula Vista was playing its first game of the season after being in COVID-19 protocol. Sophomore QB Sean Arce completed 9 of 18 es for 88 yards.

Orange Glen 45, Castle Park 13: Orange Glen (1-0) opened its season after canceling its scrimmage and first 2 games because of COVID behind an 11 for 15 ing performance for 355 yards and 4 TDs for QB Dennis Andrew. Kaleb Garcia had 3 catches for 86 yards, Malachi Keels had 3 catches for 62 yards and a TD and Jonathan Littlejohn had 2 catches for 120 yards and 2 TDs. Carlos Chavez led Orange Glen’s defense with 8 tackles. Junior running back Sergio Cobos scored both TDs for Castle Park (0-3).

Rancho Buena Vista 28, Vista 0: The Rancho Buena Vista defense, which didn’t allow Vista (1-2) to convert any of its 6 fourth-down plays, was led by sophomore LB Jose Ramos’ 10 tackles and junior safety Jay Smith’s 9 tackles. Rancho Buena Vista, 3-0 for the first time since 2013, got 18 carries for 179 yards and 3 TDs from Gino Trao.

Poway 28, Ramona 14: Poway (2-1) built a 21-0 lead on TD runs of 51 yards by Connor Rath, 6 yards by Eric Gant and 3 yards by Luke Gonzalez. Ramona (2-1) scored on a 28-yard from QB Devin Sobczak to Brandon Smith and a 6-yard Sobczak run, but Gonzalez ran 44 yards for a TD to clinch the win with 4 minutes left. Poway rushed 42 times for a whopping 278 yards.

Santa Fe Christian 56, Francis Parker 14: Santa Fe Christian (3-0) had 14 players carry the ball, led by Cooper Whitton with 6 carries for 136 yards and 3 TDs. He also caught an 11-yard scoring . Dante Rotchford topped the defense with 7 tackles. Chris White had 9 rushes for 43 yards and 2 catches for 88 yards and a TD for Parker (2-1) while also getting 18 tackles on defense.

La Jolla Country Day 47, Army-Navy 10: QB Bito Bass-Sulpizio had 3 TD es and 2 rushing TDs for La Jolla Country Day (2-1). Jaden Mangini ran for 2 TDs and forced a fumble on defense. Alex Glynn intercepted 2 es and recovered a fumble as the Torreys collected 5 turnovers.

Eastlake 18, La Habra 14: Eastlake (2-1) bounced back from a 14-0 halftime deficit to top the Highlanders on the road. Jordan Blondin was 7 of 13 ing for 70 yards and a TD in addition to rushing for 60 yards. Jayden Cortell had two more interceptions, giving him 5 on the season. Tre White was credited with 5 sacks.

Montgomery 7, Crawford 0: John Estrada pulled in a 6-yard TD from Ryan Vasquez and Montgomery (1-1) held on to top Crawford (0-3). The Aztecs defense recovered a pair of fumbles in the shutout.

University City 75, Southwest-El Centro 6: The 75 points set a UC school record, eclipsing the 69-13 win against La Jolla Country Day in 2018. The Centurions (3-0) are averaging 59.3 points. Samuel Cooper III ed for touchdowns ing, rushing and receiving.

Santa Margarita 39, St. Augustine 10: Isaiah Pressley gained 104 yards on 20 carries and Juan Hurtado added 80 yards on 11 carries for St. Augustine (0-3). Saints are 0-3 for the first time since 1998.

Patrick Henry 56, Monte Vista 6: Patrick Henry (2-1) is lighting up scoreboards, averaging 39.7 points per game.

La Jolla 28, Point Loma 21: Makai Smith had the go-ahead touchdown catch for La Jolla (2-1), scored a rushing TD plus had an interception to thwart Point Loma’s last drive. Sophomore Aaron Lee scored a rushing and receiving TD for the Pointers (0-3).

Holtville 44, Hoover 21: Jayden Barnett scored on an 81-yard punt return and 24-yard run for Hoover (1-1).

Coronado 33, El Capitan 28: Zane Delcore rushed 19 times for a career-high 249 yards, including a 42-yard TD on Coronado’s (2-1) first play. QB Hudson Herber threw for 180 yards, including TDs of 76 yards to Graham Bower, 24 yards to Finley Alexander and 36 yards to Donny Couts. For El Capitan (2-1), Savigon Yokley threw for 136 yards and 2 TDs and caught 4 es for 89 yards, including a 27-yard TD. Santana 40, Mar Vista 27: Brayden Breshears rushed 16 times for 189 yards and 2 TDs, including a 65-yarder, as Santana (3-0) totaled 327 rushing yards. Luke Nash and Logan Jordan added to the attack. Santana overcame 5 turnovers in the first half, including a 45-yard fumble return TD by Diego Arrizon for Mar Vista. Nathaniel Ramos raced 60 yards into the end zone with an interception for Mar Vista (2-1).

West Hills 41, Olympian 12: QB Braden Oberg was 8 of 15 for 143 yards and TDs to Max Conaway, who had 4 catches for 111 yards and a TD, and Elias Sanchez. Oberg also rushed for 2 TDs. West Hills (3-0) has outscored its opponents 117-19. Dylan Snyder and Donovan Mjelde had interceptions for Olympian (0-3). QB Kristian Noriega was 10 of 19 ing for 135 yards and 2 TDs to Jake Marcial.
